These are my friends Nancy Gist and Janet Randolph with me on a hiking trip in the French Dordogne. Gnats were zooming zestily into our eyes. After inadvertently inhaling a couple of the pesky critters, I remembered seeing an elderly French man walking in the woods with ferns in his hat. No, not camouflage, he’d explained. The moving ferns shoo bugs away from your face.
These aren’t ferns, but oak tree twigs that we’re wearing so jauntily. The trick absolutely works, but there are a couple of challenges. First, the waving leaves obscure your vision. Second, it’s hard to secure the twigs so they don’t fall off the hat. Note the slippage over Janet’s face. (Photo by Judy Leaver)
